HTC Hero

htc-hero-or-t-mobile-g1-touch-android-mobile-179166

An HTC Hero vs iPhone 3GS phenomenon is ‘in’ all over the blogs and shows battle between major brands and the tendency of users to compare iPhone latest model with HTC new phone. Let us analyze this HTC Hero vs iPhone 3GS battle, HTC Hero comes with Teflon-coating which makes it attractive by any standards.

The 3.2 inch touchscreen of HTC Hero is claimed to be scratch proof – good news for those who don’t want to cage their phones into leather covers and gives it an advantage over iPhone 3GS. HTC Sense UI is fairly well designed and usable for all age groups.

The killer feature of HTC Hero is its amazing support for Flash Player, videos and games which make it compatible with all the latest happenings. On the negative side HTC Hero camera doesn’t come with a flash which really is disappointing for photographers. Given all these mesmerizing features HTC Hero is a strong contestant in the battle of HTC Hero vs iPhone.

iPhone 3GS

iphone_3gs

iPhone 3GS is the most advanced version of iPhone series and its fan club don’t even think about a competition titled HTC Hero vs iPhone. On the contrary the advancement in speed, memory and storage makes it one an obvious choice for iPhone users. The memory of iPhone 3GS is doubled, storage is increased up to 16GB and 32GB and the speed of overall operations is increased tremendously.

The awaited feature of cut, copy, paste which was missing in the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G is now made available which solves the basic issue of iPhoen 3GS fans and puts iPhone way ahead in the HTC Hero vs iPhone phenomenon.

Picture messages can now be sent through iPhone 3GS which again makes the sharing of pleasant moments just few taps away. The 3.2 megapixels camera now lets you record the video and comes with cool editing app. In conclusion, iPhone 3GS comes close to be a winner in HTC Hero vs iPhone 3GS analysis, having said that HTC Hero is way better than all other competitors.

  2. theARTIST Says:

Wow who wrote this. I’m not one to judge but that is an idiotic comparison. You’re happy about features on the new Iphone like copy and paste which the G1 came with. And you’re talking about a 3.2 mp camera when the Hero has a 5 mp camera. The Hero kills the Iphone. The Iphone is poopy.

  3. theARTIST Says:

Oh and the Iphone doesn’t innovate in any way. Its homescreen sucks its a bunch of icons and you can’t customize it the way you want. On the Hero the UI is so smart it updates your friends based on whatever they do in accordance to Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Messaging right under their own hub on your Home screen. The Iphone doesn’t do that. The Iphone may have been the first to have an App store but its restricted by Apple. The Hero has been in development for about 3 years and the ability to use websites with Flash is an instant killer. Iphone can’t compete. Hero Wins. People buy Iphone because its the ‘cool thing’ for the image concious but really its not all that. Iphone is poopy.

  4. boss_me_acn Says:

You are completely right this kills the gayphone, sorry I mean Iphone. lol I’m actually using my g1 at the moment with the hero Rom. I think its great on here just cant imagine how awesome it will be on the hero, can’t wait for it to release!

  5. Flyifyoucan Says:

Go htc hero iphone is poopy..still stuck with a whimpy camera eh? 3,2 mp vs 5mp hero owns!!

  6. amarveezy Says:

any ideas of what carrier the hero will be available for?

  8. James231 Says:

How naive, the iPhone is not poopy, in terms of how streamlined the device is and how everything is executed – well, the iPhone ‘poops’ all over the HTC equivalent.
I am not saying the HTC Hero isn’t a good device because it does look good, but dismissing the iPhone because it doesn’t have the same camera pixel rating is ridiculous.

Does the HTC Hero have an app store like Apple? Does the HTC Hero have the same web browsing experience that the iPhone can provide (i have seen video’s and although the HTC has flash, its no where near)? It might not be as customizable, but Apple for me any day!!

  9. HTCHeroPOWER Says:

The iphone is the king of smartphones, from its design and user interface to its web browser and app store it’s a popular choice for many buyers but success has come at a price. First off is the fact that it has remained relatively unchanged over its two year life span, look at the entire range of products from the 1st gen iPod touch to the iphone 3gs, they almost look and operate the same. The software features that Apple deliberately left out of the first gen iphones; MMS, bluetooth stereo, 3G, cut and paste, features that literally every phone had, now available on the 3GS and also available on the 3G after a year of owners struggling without them. Also the glaring fact that Apple refuses to push the hardware in order to make the iphone slick and speedy hence the lack of true multi-tasking support and the iron handed rule book thrown in the direction of potential app store developers. Finally, the sheer greed of Apple and the select carriers such as AT&T and O2 who pay a premium to Apple for exclusive rights then jack up the prices for the consumers, does anybody think that GBP919 for an unlocked 32Gb iphone 3GS is daylight robbery considering that an unlocked HTC Hero will cost GBP400?
I bypassed the slick marketing campaigns and the fact that all my friends had given in to them, and I ordered a HTC Hero because for me it was the only way to enforce my individuality.

  10. thePan Says:

As an somehow objective bystander, trying to choose between an iphone 3gs and the htc hero, i came to the conclusion… to buy neither of them.

Don’t get me wrong, both cellphones shine in their own categories, while the iphone 3GS got its astonishing speed, the HTC Hero blinds me with “his” gorgeous and male look.

If I could choose, i’d take Hero’s carbon outer shell and put iphones processing power in it. However, on their own, both cellphones seem like lacklustering semi-updates and my next phone shall be a ver2.0 and not a mediocre 1.5

  11. Becikl Says:

Strangley nobody mentions the poor quality of video shooting on the Hero… Sorry but 15 frames per second and such a small resolution is just not satisfying.. Not to mention higher resolution videos play very laggy on the phone…

  12. Glenn Says:

ok so yes we know there is a battle on between these teo phones but really why is there?
One is a great phone with lots of options a great camera and awesome apps store the other is the HTC Hero, I own a Hero and in my view it’s the best & most user friendly phone i have ever owned (changed over from windows mobile). I will from this moment always consider Android first when looking into phones.
Yes the Iphone is good, great even but you cannot get away from the greed that is Apple.
The 3gs offers nothing more really than the Hero and in some cases lacks a little of the wow factor that the Hero offers. Yes we know before the fan boys start about the camera again etc etc etc oh and yes i know iphone has just got a new app for facebook (facebook3) but its just lacking in options. End of the day the device is controled by apple meaning they will squeeze every penny out of you at every corner.
I am a fan of the Iphone its a neat bit of kit but its a better fashion item, its a status thing and it shows with the contract prices. It is charged through the roof and really what does it do so much better than any other smart phone out there not just the HTC hero.
You have to make your choice you can have a apple iphone where 99% of everything you want for it is charged full price and has 1000’s of apps most of them lets face it useless or you could go the HTC route and have a smaller apps store (for now) where most of it is free (still with 100’s of useless apps lol but who cares there free).
I for one will be holding on tight to the Hero and shaking my head and feeling a bit sorry for the fashion freaks out there that never use half the options on the iphone but got one as someone on telly told them “it was cool”

  13. some guy who hates android users Says:

You guys are fucking idiots. Calling the iphone bad etc, all these mobile companies are trying to get rich quick by making phones fabled as the next iphone killer, and guess what. None of them to date are.

So stop crying because you can’t afford an iphone and had to settle with 2nd best.

  14. simon Says:

I own both an iphone 3gs and the htc hero and I prefer the iphone. The hero is slower to react and not as smooth running as the iphone. Also the iphone has far more apps etc. I admit the camera has more pixels on the hero but it does not really make a lot of difference looking at the pair together if anything the picture still seems to look better on the iphone. anyone who owns both phones will surely tell you they prefer the iphone its not massively better but its still better. If your wondering which phone to buy between these two and don’t mind paying a bit extra get the iphone. My brother also had the hero then when he used my iphone he got one as well and the hero he had is now with the highest bidder on ebay enough said.

  15. Dan Says:

Lots of things wrong with this review.

    1. The iPhone 3GS also has a scratch-resistant screen. Both devices also have smudge-resistant coatings on the screens, btw..

    2. The iPhone doesn’t have a cmera flash, so why single this out on the Hero?

    3. Why make out that cut, copy and paste would put the iPhone way ahead of the Hero? The Hero has this feature as well! (In fact, the iPhone has been sorely lacking in the feature for a long time)

    4. Again, why single out the iPhone’s ability to do MMS? The Hero can also do this!

It seems like this review was intended to sound impartial, but make out the iPhone was the clear winner – but seeing as the points used in the iPhone’s favour are also on the Hero they can hardly be used to make out the iPhone is superior.

    Also, in regards to comments from James231;

    1. Yes, the Hero has Android Market, which is like the Apple App Store. Yes, the App Store does contain more apps, but the iPhone has been out longer, so that’s to be expected.etter, though, as apps download and install in the background, allowing you to continue to browse Market, instead of kicking you back tot he home screen.

    2. The browsing experience is practically identical. Both browsers are fast and both have “pinch-to-zoom” mutitouch capability. The iPhone is a tad faster, but this is only noticable in a side-by-side comparison. In real worlds usage, the Hero’s web browsing experince is as good as the iPhones.

Personally, I far prefer the Hero to the iPhone. I’ve found to many little niggles in the iPhone that just get on my nerves and – so long as you get the firmware update for the Hero – the speed of the devices is practically identical. The Hero’s interface and social networking integration make a mockery of the iPhone’s now-dated “screen of icons” interface.

In my mind, thew Hero is a perfect compeitor for the iPhone. Not an “iPhone killer,” but happily on-par with it. Which device you prefer is mainly down to personal choice. If you like simplicity, go with the iPhone. If you like a highly-customisable interface, it’s Hero all the way.

The iPhone is far from poop and is a very good device – but its also far from being the uber-phone that defeats all others that some would have us believe.

  16. david Says:

I dun understand y u ppl compare iPhone 3GS with the HTC Hero, its on a total different price range, if you need to compare, then compare iPhone 3G to HTC Hero. From there then you’ll be able to scope how much lacking iPhone 3G is to HTC Hero.

  17. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen! :) Says:

Hahaa, it is more streamlined, lol what is it a car?! lol. (I know what you mean). What should I get a HTC or Iphone, the 1 thing that is really putting me off is the fact i have a itouch, so it would basically be pointless to pay for a whole new touch just with added phone

  18. chris Says:

    HTC > APPLE IPHONE 3GS

Truth, once the HTC Leo releases and developers run Android on the LEO, CASE CLOSED. sorry but the Leo + Android will be the best phone.

  19. Tech Flipper Says:

iPhone or HTC Hero? Fight is on! http://bit.ly/AG46o

  20. ian molson Says:

leo way to big, even bigger then the iphone…..

htc for me better then the 2g, 3g and 3gs i had.

  21. TiLT Says:

I wish everyone that is complaining about the mega pixel count would read up on it first. If you know anything about photography you would know that at a certain point you experience diminishing returns for mega pixels in the digital sense, especially on a phone. Megapixels make a huge difference when printing a photograph and when it is coupled with the advanced features of an actual camera such as a full flash, motion capture, etc. I have put my iPhone camera up against many phones and have found a few that look almost the same but none that seem any better.

The Hero looks great. I was a long time HTC customer and I like their phones a lot. A couple things make the decision for me to keep my iPhone.
    1. iPod – I can have my music with me at all times since I never go anywhere without my phone. (To the person complaining about buying a phone when you already have a touch, simple fix…sell your touch and only have one device, duh)
    2. App store – Apple has created a market with the app store that will not be easily overcome. Apple did an outstanding job getting the iPhone in the hands of a ton of people. Developers are going to spend their time where they can see the most returns and that will probably remain the app store with Apple.
    3. Speed – Watch some of the YouTube videos and see for yourself
    4. Apple has the lead and will continue to make innovations. The iPhone was first released in July 2007 and is already on software 3.0. Other devices are just now catching up to the technology of the iPhone but Apple has 2 years worth of testing and improving under their belt.
    5. Rhapsody streaming music – Rhapsody has the only subscription based full streaming music app. This allows you to pay $15 a month and use your Rhapsody library or stream music directly over 3G. It is super fast, reliable and the ability to listen to any song at any time is just amazing (requires a jailbreak to have it run in the background like the iPod but do you blame Apple? If I was Apple I would be directing people to purchase from iTunes as well).

For me the iPhone just makes sense. Pair everything with the ability to easily jailbreak and simply install more apps that enable even the least tech savvy people to tweak their devices and you have a monster (look up videos on the ease of jailbreaking you iPhone now with BlackRa1n if you don’t believe me…download, plug phone in, push one button and 40 seconds later it’s done). Yes Apple restricts some things and you have to have a jailbreak to allow them but as we have seen so far Apple is not stupid. They actually take some of the ideas from the jailbreaks and implement them into the phone as they upgrade.

  22. TiLT Says:

    Don’t be a tard.

The HTC Hero is $180 with 2GB memory and the ability to install 32GB memory card which you HAVE TO BUY…extra $$$ there.

The iPhone 3GS 16GB is $199 and the 32GB is $299. Not that much of a difference.

  23. TiLT Says:

    Bravo!

Thank you for posting with some facts and not BS.

I agree that the HTC Hero is a good phone and is up to par with the iPhone, in different ways such as home screen customization.

The only thing I would add is that everyone should watch out for what Apple will do next with the iPhone. The iPhone has been out for over 2 years and the HTC Hero, although an up to par phone, is just now showing up and doing the things the iPhone has already been doing and innovated.

Personally I am really excited to see where the powerhouse companies with billions to spend go with our phones. It’s going to be crazy, that’s for sure.

  24. Wil Says:

Funny, the HTC Hero is more expensive than the iPhone up front, and 20 bucks cheaper after MIR. So, price has nothing to do with the judgments. I own both, the iPhone 3G s and the HTC Hero (Sprint version) and I do have to say that it does make the iPhone look a little pale in comparison. That being said, I do love the iPhone, but I also love my Hero and refuse to give up either.

  25. Wil Says:

Also, keep in mind that the Hero is only a tad “slower” because it is also loading flash, which the iPhone does not support. Now there may be a few thousand less apps in the Android Market (has 10,000+ last I checked) but keep in mind you can also use ANY flash based games in full screen, such as all the games at addictinggames dot com.

  26. Wil Says:

    1. The HTC Hero also has comparable mp3 player.
    2. Android Market is extremely comparable.
    3. Are you talking about the European version?
    4. Apple has also hardly budged since iPhone 2G (all they came up with was…3G? Remember, it was jailbreakers that came up with the app store) and continues to hold back on firmware (didnt release A2DP firmware for a year, even though the device had the hardware for it…)
    5. Rhapsody plans a release for Android Market, until then, use Pandora Radio.

Also, if it matters, the iPhone GPS chip is really weak and the accelerometer in the HTC Hero is kinda lame while browsing.

  27. TiLT Says:

True that it loads flash so that probably accounts for some of the slowness but flash is a bit unnecessary to me. I use to be quite upset that it didn’t run flash but now the apps have mad it irrelevant for me. I am much happier with the faster speed.

I was not aware that you could play games on addictinggames which is pretty neat but I much prefer the app games. They are more robust and built specifically for that platform. Plus I didn’t buy my phone for the games, I bought it to have my phone and mp3 player in one. The addition of amazing apps like Rhapsody was just a huge bonus.

I know how amazing Google is and I hope they take Android far. This will only spark greater and greater things for us, the consumer.

  28. deedee Says:

    Hi all
Just some critics without comment, on real facts : has the iphone a flash for camera? since when? the camera resolution is better on hero and the screen resolution too. it is more compact, resistant and ergonomic. i saw just one video comparison (dogfight) but i did the comparison myself with my brother that has an iphone 3gs and actually here at least hero is faster. cut and paste ? you could find it already in the first version of windows mobile…
Is the iphone multitasking? customisable? or just for application to put?
Im quite bored by all this kind of advertising disguished as tchnical real articles.

  29. deedee Says:

precision : here is France and the comparaison we made with an iphone 3gs original and a hero original as well.

  30. benci Says:

what a fucked up comparison !! the guy who compared must be a fagstick…the htc hero’s sense UI is way better than the iphone…and u cannot run multiple programs in the background of an iphone except the ipod..but with the htc hero you can run multiple programs..so i would say the hero is a real HERO in the smartphone category:P

  31. claudio Says:

everyone taliking about the hero and 3gs looks, and camera etc.. please get “hands on” ad try the HTC SENSE! its bloody amazing!

  32. anand Says:

i think the iphone is way too overrated.its a good phone and the touchscreen experience is outstanding, but that doesnt make ita good phone.well here in indian the iphone 3gs costs 49k but the hero is affordable atr jus 32k!!
    go hero!!!!!!

  33. THE STL CBR RACER Says:

Does the HTC Hero have an app store like Apple?
A: Not yet, however, It does have the Andriod Market. The Android Market has been expanding rapidly and after a year of availability, it currently offers over 10,000 applications for download (via: Olga Kharif on October 27 at businessweek.com). In the next year or two, its pretty much a certainty that Android and iPhone will have very similar app libraries, both in quantity and variety. Quality, however, is another matter entirely due to Apple’s (a) micromanagement of the approval process, (b) curiously casual, last-century pace of OS updates and (c) reluctance to allow (developers) access to native apps/APIs. Already, we’re seeing developers who choose to introduce their new apps on Android _first_ and then often with functionality not offered in the iPhone version.

It’s open source, it’ll not only run on multiple phones but multiple devices (Barnes&Noble’s newly announced nook runs on Android), and there is no fear that google will reject an app from being in their store.

A developer can spend a substantial amount of effort on an app but still have it rejected by apple for any (or no) reason.

Also there is a much bigger pool of java/linux programmers than objective-c programmers so the learning curve for android isn’t that steep.

So developing for an open platform, which multiple devices from multiple vendors will run on vs a platform that has one phone model from one company (that may reject your app) may be a no-brainer for alot of developers.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like the iPhone but I think the number of Android apps will skyrocket and surpass the number in apple’s app store within a year.

  34. Tim Says:

I bought the Hero last week for the reasons described above: the Hero looks slightly better than the iPhone on paper. I exchanged it over the weekend for an iPhone. Here are the reasons:

    * WiFi hardly worked. It made a connection, but data flowed intermittently, if at all. This happened at home, work and other places. Others have had this problem, one that I do *not* have with the iPhone

    * The Hero is sluggish

*I had two problems that required tech support. First, the Hero’s firmware update was not working. Second, at one point applications wouldn’t download.

*I could not find a decent Podcast manager. Even Google’s “Listen” app left me missing iTunes.

*Little to no signal at home. That wasn’t a problem for the iPhone, surprisingly, as AT&T is supposed to have poor coverage.

    *iPhone has a cleaner design.

Basically, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

  35. There's an App for that! Says:

I have read all the comparisons and here is a second hand opinion. I know someone who was contemplating buying an iPhone but opted for the Pre, because they already had Sprint. The buyer had problems immediately with a UI that was not as easy to navigate as the iPhone. The Pre malfunctioned, began beeping intermittently and neither Sprint nor the Palm Customer Service could figure it out. When returning the phone, the Best Buy reps said this is Sprint’s biggest flop. On to the Hero. Upon purchase, setup was trouble. First, you need to have a Gmail account. If you don’t have one, you gotta set one up. Then you can attempt to program the email account for whatever email you have, if not Gmail. Two customers at the store attempted to set up their Yahoo account with no success. The Best Buy reps then said the customer had to go home to access the Sprint Hero page and continue some configuration there. iPhone just works, easy! My wife and I have had the 3G and 3GS with no technical issues and it has always been to set up. There is NO better multifunction device. The lack of Flash and apps running in the background is no big issue for me. I’m totally satisfied. I suspect the two buyers mentioned earlier will be iPhone customers this holiday season.

  36. WireLess Says:

Doesn’t matter how fast the browser is on Iphone if I have to drive a 100 miles to get 3G. AT&T only has about 3 locations in our state with 3G, but Verizon and Cellular South have it pretty well covered.

  37. K Says:

i still don’t know which one to choose.. I’ve had the same old LG for over 2 years.. i HATE it.. my boyfriend has sprint and wants us to get the same plan to be cheaper.. both my roommates have the iphone and swear by it. There are so many pro’s and con’s. I read them all and think i may go with the iphone..

  38. Anton Says:

Thank god its not just me who sees sense lol
im getting hero on fridayy (:

  39. Rotten Apple Says:

I will definately be going with the HTC Hero. First of all, as a developer, I prefer the open-source and the less-restrictive application creation. Apple has and always will be far too greedy and propriatary. LIke many, I used to be an Apple junkie, until I bought a 4k setup for my graphics studio. A monitor was actually shipped to me cracked and I was out over 2k as they refused to repair/replace it for me. I believe that a company that cannot stand behind their products should not be supported, period. I’ve gone out of my way to be sure people understand Apple does not back up their products whatsoever. I’ve learned many people have had similar experiences to mine with Apple, so buyers beware. HTC on the otherhand, from personal experience alongside Sprint has always gone above and beyond their duty to assist me with my cellular needs. What I am saying is if nothing else please look at the manufacturer and what type of support/warranty they offer before making that purchase.

  40. joey Says:

nothing can touch the iphone..i can do 20 times more stuff than any other phone and can prove it.

  41. joey Says:

half of you people are stupid and dont know how to use the iphone..fuk a camra megapixal the htc can have that crap..i got 32 gigs what does that p.o.s have in it

  42. joey Says:

and another thing for you dumb fucks..you can make the iphone UI look like the htc..duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  43. joey Says:

wait till the iChat comes out with the new iphone..you people will be back on the iphones dick again..get your weight up or get out weighed fuck niggas

  44. Captain Obvious Says:

Obviously this article was written by a computer program, and not a human. now that thats out of the way. i have owned both phones, and HTC Hero (surprisingly) is much much better. It can do everything the iphone can do and more. Iphone has a lot of restrictions which people who are not developers dont understand. if you are happy with the iphone, then great (its ok) – ignorance is bliss.

  45. magalie Says:

yes, we’ve gotten rid of the computer program and we try to use humans now :D
I agree, I used to own both phone. But I loved the hero better. Can’t wait for the HTC Legend

  46. Adam Says:

My brother has the Hero and here in Mississippi we have Cellular South which is $50 dollars a month which includes 500 minutes, unlimited web and text. Last time I checked with iPhone it would cost about $150 dollars a month. Compared it costs 3x as much to get an iPhone when the Hero is more customizable and generally has more appeal to me.
